COVINGTON, Kentucky – In a significant political upset that underscores President Donald Trump’s continued influence within the Republican Party, former Navy SEAL and farmer Ed Gallrein has defeated seven-term incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie in the GOP primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District.
According to results reported Tuesday night, Gallrein secured approximately 55% of the vote, while Massie received 45%. Massie conceded the race shortly after polls closed, bringing an end to his 14-year tenure in Congress.

The race drew national attention as one of the most expensive House primaries in U.S. history, with more than $30 million spent on advertising, much of it from pro-Trump super PACs and outside groups. President Trump personally endorsed Gallrein and campaigned actively against Massie, whom he has criticized for years over his independent voting record on issues including immigration, foreign aid, and fiscal policy.
Background on the Candidates
Ed Gallrein, a combat veteran and dairy farmer from Northern Kentucky, positioned himself as a loyal supporter of the Trump agenda. During his campaign, he emphasized border security, economic growth, and strong national defense. Gallrein thanked Trump in his victory speech, stating that the endorsement was instrumental in mobilizing voters across the district.
Thomas Massie, known for his libertarian-leaning views and willingness to break with Republican leadership, has often opposed Trump-backed legislation. His independence earned him a dedicated following but also made him a target in this cycle.

What This Means for Kentucky and the GOP
The 4th District, which includes suburbs of Cincinnati and stretches along the Ohio River, is heavily Republican. The winner of the primary is heavily favored to win the general election in November.
Political analysts view Gallrein’s victory as a clear signal that Trump’s endorsement remains a powerful force in Republican primaries. It also highlights the party’s shift toward greater unity behind the president’s priorities ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Gallrein will now face the Democratic nominee in the fall. The district has not elected a Democrat to Congress since the 1970s.
Reactions
President Trump posted on Truth Social: “Congratulations to Ed Gallrein on a big WIN in Kentucky! Thomas Massie was a great disappointment. Now we have a true fighter for America First!”
Massie, in his concession remarks, acknowledged the results and joked about his independent streak, saying he may now be “trans-partisan.”
Local Republican leaders celebrated the outcome, calling it a step toward a more cohesive party in Washington.
